Dear Africa
On my travels in ministry, I set out to write Dear Africa in my spare time. While writing, I held the belief that somehow the spirit of my message would somehow resonate with the people of Africa. I could never have guessed how quickly the changes I sought would come about.
The following excerpt is an excerpt from ‘Dear Africa‘:
“Some years ago I was holding a conference in a vibrant East African capital. I
watched the national evening newscast in my hotel room and saw a news clip
which caused me anxiety for many years. The president of the nation was
visiting one of the beautiful schools and took time to give a motivational talk to
those immaculately uniformed children. The part of his speech which the
broadcaster chose to highlight went as follows; ‘You are very fortunate to have
the opportunity to be in this school. You must study hard and especially, you
must learn English, French, German and other European languages. This is
because the English, the French, the Germans and other Europeans will come
here and open their businesses. They will need people who know their languages
to work for them, so you will get a job.’ The president drew applause from both
staff and students for this piece of generational ‘wisdom’”
The experience had shaken me to the core and I wondered what would become of the continent. The issue that had stirred up my anxiety was that an African president was advocating for the training of black children to fill only the role of employees who would assist foreigners to become the dominant players in the game of exploiting the economic resources of Africa. And the trainers, the teachers, were applauding.
The New Africa
The same region that spurned the spirit of economic independence has planted the seed of true economic independence and expression. Rwanda has nurtured a truly inspiring African innovation created by the Mara Group. The combination of such a forward looking country and the entrepreneurial spirit of the founder of the Mara Group, Ashish Thakkar, has produced the first African manufactured smartphone!

The African Reality
I have come to believe that it is no longer a dream but a reality that will come to fruition in the coming years. I am truly excited to see what more will come from Mother Africa.
